Developing Grit
At the Illinois Reading Conference in Springfield this October, I attended a presentation by Staff Development for Educators (SDE) Jim Grant on "Grit, Mindset, and Determination: The Key to Perseverance." Since then, I have been inspired to find more information on how to use grit and perseverance lessons in my classroom to help motivate my students. Furthermore, these skills carry over into the athletic world as well. As a high school basketball and softball coach, I can see how my athletes benefit from embracing these intangible qualities as they develop grit traits.

Where are you going for your resources? I think this is an interesting topic, especially considering some of the students I have in class this year.
ReplyDeleteI have a number of handouts that I took away from the reading conference; I can e-mail them to you if you would like. Beyond that, I have found more ideas on Edutopia, Pinterest (I created a Grit board where I have been gathering a number of resources if you want to check that out), and through various other Internet sources.
DeleteI admire perseverance in learning and competition. The meaning of grit is debated and often misunderstood. My deeper thinking on this is found in this post, "Grit, Resilience, and The Missing Angle"; http://goo.gl/Ap2lqh I love your blog title! #StayConnected
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your original post. I enjoyed reading the comments and added one of my own.
